General information
Province: Salerno
Placed in a splendid position in the gulf of Salerno, not away from
the Town Hall of Ravello, Scala whose name has perhaps reported to
the characteristics of the ground in slant, rises inside the valley
of the stream Dragon.
It can be defined as the most ancient city of the Amalfitan Coast.
It represents a true jewel without time, enriched by the fresh air
of mountain and by a warm and pleasant atmosphere. An ideal solution
for who loves the cultural tourism. There are in fact of the paths
that conduct to small villages and medieval ruins that strike over
that for their beauty, for the landscapes of the coast and the
valley below.
Historical outlines
It's not known if the first men to
come in these places have been of the patricians or of the
“naviculari” busy in new business that looked for a sure place to
take cover. Of sure the Scala inhabitants, as the Amalfi
inhabitants, have loved always to underline their own ancestry from
the ancient Roman patriciate.
Set on fire and stolen by Roberto the Guiscardo, gentleman of
Salerno, in 1073, Scala suffered all the vicissitudes of the
Amalfitan Coast.
During the '700 and '800 the splendid view offered by the territory
attracted to Scala numerous travellers of the Grand Tour.
