Historical outlines
The
first news about this territory goes up around the 977, when the
bishop of Paestum, called Pando, sold some land possessiones to some
sailors of Atrani. During the war of the "Vespro" the suburb was
conquered by the almugaveris (1286), to be regained then by the
angioinis in 1299. In 1349 Queen Giovanna returned Castellabate to
the abbey and subsequently Pope Gregorio sold it to king Ladislao.
In the 1436 king Alfonso granted this territory to Giovanni
Sanseverino, count of Marsico and baron of the Cilento. This family
held Castellabate up to the rebellion of Ferrante (1552) from where
it reached to counts and princes up to the destruction of the
feudality (1806).
