Situated on a tufaceous balcony on the northern side of the Lattari
mountains, Sant'Agnello is one of the four town hall that form the
Sorrento peninsula, and it is the richest of green. Among important
activities is to remember the bricks production, famous are also the
production of artistic candles, the inlay of the wood and the
workmanship of the marble.
Historical outlines:
The name clearly refers to the patron of the town hall, a
Benedictine monk to whom is dedicate the principal church of the
village. Around 1500 it was dominated (with the kingdom of Naples)
from the Spaniards for about two centuries. The Town Hall
constituted an unique territory with Sorrento up to 1808, when it
was united to Piano, that got the autonomy in that year. The history
of S. Agnello, that become autonomous only
in 1866, coincides therefore with that of Sorrento and of Piano. In
1894, finally it also installed in the area of the Town Hall, the
Consulate of the United States.
